چکیده

“The problem of social cost” is a major piece of Coase’s legacy. It constitutes the foundation of the neo-institutionalism movement. This article tries to provide a solution to situations characterized by disputes on the use of resources. We propose a libertarian and Rothbardian re-examination. In the first section, the Coase theorem is the object of a personal appraisal. The second section stresses the common points between the Coasian approach and the classical school of the economics of crime. The third section examines the consequences of both of these theories for public policy. ∗ Researcher at the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research. The author would like to thank Nicolai Gertchev for his precious comments. The usual caveat applies. 2 New Perspectives on Political Economy

Ronald Coase’s landmark 1937 article, ‘‘The Nature of the Firm,’’ framed the study of organizational economics for decades. Coase asked three fundamental questions: Why do firms exist? What determines their boundaries? How should firms be organized internally? To answer the first question, Coase famously appealed to ‘‘the costs of using the price mechanism,’’ what we now call transaction costs ...

Coase and Bertrand on lighthouses

Coase (Journal of Low and Economics 17(2):185–213, 1974) failed to appreciate that the construction and maintenance of nineteenth-century lighthouses were in part financed by British taxpayers. Bertrand (Cambridge Journal of Economics 30:389–402, 2006) rightly calls him to account. While agreeing with Bertrand’s conclusion, we dispute her reasoning and argue that lighthouses nevertheless could ...
